There are some issues with growing vegetables (plants of any kind, really) in space. One of the key issues: They don’t have any air in space. Air is kind of important for growing plants. So the Chinese Astronaut Research and Training Center did some little experiments. They created a sealed ecosystem where plants took in CO2 and generated oxygen. And they also grew. There were people living in the sealed ecosystem, and they were able to eat the vegetables that grew. The whole thing was very win-win-win. Other countries have tried to do this, but the Chinese have gotten the furthest.

China is hoping to have a manned space station in 2020. The ability to grow food in space is crucial to this goal, because while it is hard to grow food, it is even harder to order delivery.
