Car geeks say the all-electric Tesla is the best car
One of the great divides in the world is between people who care about cars qua cars and people who just want to get someplace and need a metal box with an engine and four wheels to get them there in relative safety. Generally, it’s assumed that green-minded folk are in the second group, because a) why would we be advocating for electric vehicles if we cared about going fast and b) we hate cars, duh.
But EV advocates can now feel super vindicated, because Automobile Magazine, a publication for genuine gearheads, has named — of all the cars in the world — the electric Tesla Model S as the 2013 Automobile of the Year.
That is correct. The best car is an electric car.
Here is what the editors of Automobile have to say:
We weren’t expecting much from the Tesla other than some interesting dinner conversation as we considered “real” candidates like the Subaru BRZ and the Porsche Boxster. In fact, the Tesla blew them, and us, away.
Actually, the Model S can blow away almost anything. “It’s the performance that won us over,” admits editor-in-chief Jean Jennings. “The crazy speed builds silently and then pulls back the edges of your face. It had all of us endangering our licenses.”
It’s official: EVs are awesome and everyone knows it.
