Watch out, Japan, because the Eye of Sauron is coming. Or actually, maybe it looks more like the eye of some giant malign space-parrot. In any event, it is LOOKING RIGHT AT YOU.

This is actually an infrared picture of super typhoon Jelawat, a hurricane-like storm that is currently hurtling towards Japan. The eye alone is 29 miles across. On Tuesday, Jelawat briefly spun up to 160 mph winds, the equivalent of a category 5 hurricane, making it the second-strongest storm of 2012. By the time it’s near Okinawa it should be more like a category 1 or 2 storm, though, and it will be even less strong when it hits mainland Japan (if it even does — these things are hard to predict). Of course, the real worry is the wave of orcs and/or angry hench-parrots it dispatches afterwards.
