The real explanation is maybe even cooler than “’80s video games come to life” (although less reminiscent of a Futurama episode). Because gravity can bend light, the gravitational field around the galaxies in the foreground of this picture distorts the image of galaxies that are further away. That’s what turns an innocuous spiral galaxy into a terrifying arcade-game threat.

At least, that’s what they’re TELLING us.
