Ely, Minn., is putting together a time capsule to be opened in 50 years, and mixed in with the homework assignments and plastic toys (right? That’s what I always put in time capsules when I was a kid) will be a handwritten note from President Obama. Among other things, the letter expresses hope that the country will solve climate change, probably by embracing alternative energy. So if you worry that Obama doesn’t care about the climate enough right now, well — at least he cares about it later!

CBS Minnesota quoted a passage from the letter where Obama envisions a future in which the planet doesn’t go all to shit:

Fifty years from now, I hope we have managed the balance between our energy needs and our need to preserve the planet so that the wilderness surrounding Ely remains as spectacular as you describe.
