The daughter of author and environmentalism guru Wendell Berry, Mary runs the Berry Center, a rural advocacy group. She\u2019s spearheading a program that guarantees fair, reliable crop prices before farmers plant.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s easier said than done. In order to ensure fair prices, the Producer\u2019s Program has to: 1. identify a regional demand and enlist buyers; 2. organize farmers and get them to agree to crop quotas and limits; and 3. bring farmers and buyers to the table to sign long-term contracts favorable to both sides.<\/p>\n<p>True to the Berry reputation, she\u2019s taking a stubborn-as-all-hell approach. \u201cWe have to go with economics,\u201d says Berry. \u201cIf it\u2019s not going to pay, it\u2019s not going to work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>What to expect in 2016:<\/strong> The Producer\u2019s Program will finalize its relationship with its first big buyer. The first crops will be organic grains for animal feed, and the long-term contracts will help enable farmers to transition to organic. There\u2019s a dearth of organic animal feed, and Berry hopes the deal will make the $45 organic chickens at the Louisville farmers markets a little more affordable. The Berry Center will also move forward in talks to source both the bourbon industry and craft brewers with grains.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The New Year\u2019s resolution she\u2019ll likely bail on:<\/strong> \u201cI always resolve to be more patient, more charitable, and more kind,\u201d Berry says. \u201cI never manage to make it through New Year\u2019s Day.
