The organization he was thinking of was a national one &#8212; one that bridged the gap between Latinos and the mainstream conservation\u00a0movement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted something that was a direct connection,\u201d says Gonz\u00e1lez. \u201cA hub.\u201d Problem is, that organization didn\u2019t exist. So he started his own group, <a href=\"http:\/\/latinooutdoors.org\/\">Latino Outdoors<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the beginning,\u201d Gonz\u00e1lez says, \u201cpeople were like \u2018What is this? How can I be a part of it?\u2019 I said, \u2018Let\u2019s figure this out together.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The group is still in its nascent stages (Latino Outdoors has more than 2,000 followers on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/latinooutdoors\/\">Instagram<\/a>) but the impact has already been felt: Last year, Gonz\u00e1lez talked national monument conservation with President Obama in the Oval Office.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What to expect in 2016: <\/strong>Latino Outdoors is working with <a href=\"http:\/\/encuentratuparque.com\/\">Encuentra Tu Parque<\/a>\/\u201cFind Your Park,\u201d a National Park Service campaign to connect people with their local parks, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalparks.org\/ook\/every-kid-in-a-park\">Every Kid in a Park<\/a> initiative, a White House project that gives every 4th grader in the country <a href=\"https:\/\/everykidinapark.gov\/get-your-pass\/\">free access to the national park system<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Role model:<\/strong> Hugo Morales, founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/radiobilingue.org\/\">Radio Biling\u00fce<\/a>. \u201cMy background is not in radio, but I got to do a fellowship where I basically followed him around for a year and watched what he did,\u201d says Gonz\u00e1lez. \u201cHe created Radio Biling\u00fce specifically so that Latinos would have access to public information.
