President Joe Biden signed a proclamation creating a new national monument on Wednesday, protecting acres of federal land in Colorado that provides critical habitat for wildlife like elk and migratory songbirds. The Biden administration also proposed a 20-year ban on mining and drilling on an additional 225,000 acres of public land in the same area.

The world’s largest reinsurance company, Munich Re, announced new restrictions on its coverage of fossil fuel projects. (Reinsurance contracts cover primary insurers to help them spread their risks.) Beginning next April, Munich Re will stop providing coverage for new oil and gas fields, new oil transport and storage facilities, and new oil-fired power plants.
