25 Years on the Climate Beat

Grist is a nonprofit, independent media organization dedicated to reporting on climate change. Since 1999, we have used the power of journalism to engage the public about the perils of one of the most existential threats we face. We seek to document the often unequal impacts of climate change on communities in the United States and globally — as well as to show the promise of equitable climate solutions.

People Sitting

With 40 journalists spread across nearly 20 U.S. states, Grist is the largest and most experienced climate-focused newsroom in the country. Our work aims to illustrate how the effects of a warming planet intersect with, well, everything. Through a mix of daily reporting, features, investigations, and visual storytelling, Grist examines how climate change touches everything from food prices to people’s health and well-being. We cover vulnerable communities burdened by toxic chemicals, and we report on all aspects of the transition from fossil fuels to cleaner, renewable energy sources. And as a nonprofit outlet, our journalism is never behind a paywall. It is accessible to anyone, in any community.

Our reporting reaches millions of people and has real-life impact: Elected officials, scientific researchers, and those on the front lines of combatting climate change, among many others, have cited, amplified, and praised our work. In fact, 65 percent of readers report via on-site surveys taking action based on our content.

Just like one person cannot solve climate change alone, Grist cannot do its work alone. Partnerships are fundamental to our work; we make our work free to republish, and we frequently partner with other media outlets on stories to reach the broadest possible audience. Through our Local News Initiative, we partner with local media organizations to embed climate reporters who fill reporting gaps. We then make their coverage available to other newsrooms to syndicate for free, too.

Through our community engagement efforts, we find innovative ways to distribute our journalism to new audiences through events, flyers, training programs, and more. And our events team collaborates with partners, such as the Aspen Institute and Science Friday, to host everything from provocative, live conversations to visioning workshops that allow attendees to dream up a more just and sustainable future as well as the pathways to reaching it.

All of these strands of Grist’s work are powered by you. Our work is only possible thanks to the support of readers, as well as a network of foundations, major donors, corporate sponsors, and advertisers. Your support helps us show the path to a future on the other side of the climate crisis.
