Coca-Cola has reneged on a promise to use recycled plastic in its bottles, an environmental group charged this week. The GrassRoots Recycling Network, an umbrella organization for some 400 enviro groups, criticized Coke in an ad in Monday’s New York Times, and plans to run a series of similar ads in various other publications. In happier caffeinated beverage news, Starbucks next week is launching a line of coffee grown in the shade of rainforest plants, the outcome of collaboration with enviro group Conservation International. In contrast to the standard industry method of clearing land and growing coffee plants in the sun, shaded plantations preserve biologically rich forestland and provide habitat for migratory songbirds and other wildlife.
