Ten enviro activists riled up the British by staging a daring protest yesterday on the world’s largest ferris wheel, which is under construction in central London and is scheduled to open on New Year’s Eve. The enviros, from the Basque group Solidarios con Itioz and the Indian organization Narmada, were demonstrating against major dam projects on Spain’s Itioz Reservoir and India’s Narmada River. The groups targeted the $32 million “Millennium Wheel” because, like the dams, it is a gratuitous waste of money, they said. Two of the activists spent more than 30 hours atop the 450-foot structure, but eventually all 10 returned to the ground and were arrested. They plan to continue their protest throughout Europe.
