President Clinton went on the attack against Texas Gov. George W. Bush (R) yesterday, accusing him of being wrong-headed on the environment and other issues. During an interview on National Public Radio, Clinton said that if Bush wins, “he will do what he did in Texas — he will let the people who basically are the primary polluters control environmental policy.” In contrast, Clinton said that Al Gore would “try to grow the economy and keep cleaning up the environment.” A Bush advisor defended the governor’s enviro record in a controversial op-ed in the New York Times this week. A recent Los Angeles Times poll found Bush ahead of Gore, 51 percent to 43 percent.
