Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien emerged victorious from the national election Monday, but he faces a continued challenge from environmentalists critical of his efforts (or lack thereof) to protect endangered species. A new website, cookedspecies.com, pictures Chretien in a chef hat holding an endangered Vancouver Island marmot in one hand and a salt shaker in another and features a selection of his “Favourite Endangered Species Recipes.” The recipe for Marmot Marmalade, for example, instructs the cook to “permit logging on mountainsides” until the species is “done.” Visitors to the site can click on a “Kick Jean out of the kitchen” button that lets them send a fax to Chretien calling for strong national endangered species legislation. The British Columbia Endangered Species Coalition is behind the irreverent campaign.
