Enviros are rejoicing after General Motors announced yesterday that it is quitting the Global Climate Coalition, an industry lobbying group that has denied the reality of climate change and fought against efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. GM is the latest in a long line of deserters, including Ford Motor Co., DaimlerChrysler, British Petroleum, Royal Dutch/Shell, Dow Chemical, Texaco, and Southern Co., a utility that quit just last week. GM remains opposed to the Kyoto climate change treaty, but acknowledges that carbon-dioxide buildup in the atmosphere may be changing the world’s climate. After GM’s announcement, GCC Executive Director Glenn Kelly said the coalition was restructuring: Now only trade associations, not individual companies, will be able to be members.
