The staff of Grist Magazine would like to express our deep sorrow about the onset of war in Iraq. We are gravely worried about the likely destruction of human lives, human livelihoods, and the natural environment, and our hearts go out to everyone caught in the crossfire of violence — Iraqi citizens and U.S. troops alike. After lengthy deliberation, we have decided not to suspend our trademark use of humor in the headlines of the Daily Grist news summaries or elsewhere on the Grist Magazine website today to mark the beginning of the war. This decision was born out of the belief that humor is at least as important in difficult times as it is in easier ones; that laughter, like hope, is most necessary when it is hardest to come by. Now, as ever, our goal is that laughter will lead to engagement, engagement to action, and action to progressive change.
