Poor people in the U.K. are among those worst affected by environmental problems in the country, according to a recent study published in Britain. The researchers conducted a series of focus groups in four different areas — a poor neighborhood in Glasgow, another in London, a former mining village in North Wales, and a rural area in a national park in Derbyshire. One study author, Kate Burningham of the University of Surrey, said the focus group participants felt that environmental groups had tended to ignore them and had not spent time on issues that concerned their daily lives. One participant said, “Rainforests are a long way from here. They’re not affecting me at the moment…”
