Citizens who generate their own electricity by solar power or other means could get credits on their electric bills for feeding excess power to utilities, under a bill unveiled on Friday by Rep. Jay Inslee (D-Wash.). More than two dozen states already have laws that allow “net metering” of this sort, but Inslee says a uniform national standard is needed to encourage the mass development of new technologies for home power generation. Some 100,000 homes in the U.S. have major solar-electric systems, and about 10,000 are powered entirely by solar electricity, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association.
