Kevin Bacon has gone über-meta. The once-ubiquitous film actor has taken the “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon” trivia game — itself based on the already-meta concept that everyone (and everything?) is somehow connected — to a whole new level with a new charity-based website:

www.SixDegrees.org is about using this idea to accomplish something good. It’s social networking with a social conscience. Through this website, you can learn about and support the charities of celebrities and your friends, as well as fundraise for the causes close to your heart.

Your support powers solutions-focused climate reporting — keeping it free for everyone. All donations DOUBLED for a limited time. Give now in under 45 seconds.

Launched less than three weeks ago, the site has already generated more than $87,000 in donations, no doubt in part due to the participation of celebs ranging from Bacon’s wife Kyra Sedgwick (whose charity-of-choice is NRDC) to Ashley Judd (YouthAIDS) to Jessica Simpson (Operation Smile).

Bacon also encourages all of us non-celebs to become a celebrity for our favorite causes. He’ll be matching the money raised by the top six non-celeb fundraisers with grants of up to $10,000 each. Not sure which charity to support? Hmmm … I may have an idea for you.

Grist thanks its sponsors. Become one.

In the following video, Bacon talks about what inspired him to launch the site:
