In anticipation of U.S. President Bush’s visit to Madrid tomorrow, thousands of Spaniards marched through the city yesterday to protest Bush’s decision to withdraw from the Kyoto treaty on climate change and numerous other White House policies. Greenpeace activists boarded an oil tanker off the coast of France yesterday and hung a huge banner on the side of the ship reading, “Bush + Chevron + Conoco = Climate Killers.” In a statement today, Bush is expected to promise to spend millions of dollars on more research on global warming, but remain vague on whether he’d support any mandatory cutbacks of greenhouse gas emissions. Meanwhile, U.S. scientists say that in the last decade, the U.S. has fallen way behind other countries in climate change research.
