Lady Gaga and her meat dress at Video Music AwardsA steak in the dress is worth two in the bush.

Fashion-forward pop star Lady Gaga took home Video of the Year at the 2010 Video Music Awards (VMA), but she could have also grabbed the title of “Best Dressed” when she strutted out with her hams dressed in meat. While she’s not the first to wear wurst, Gaga was fully bedecked in beef from head to toe in an outfit meant to draw more attention to the rights of gay troops than to eating habits. (Though the jury is still out on her bacon-y bikini cover for Japan’s Vogue.)

The immediate question is: Will vegans bust Gaga’s chops over her meaty dress?

Animal-product-eschewing Ellen DeGeneres made sure to give her more than just a little grief about it in the singer’s post-VMA appearance on Ellen’s show, asking, “What is the purpose of the meat?”

“Well, it is certainly no disrespect to anyone that is vegan or vegetarian,” Lady Gaga explained to DeGeneres. “As you know, I am the most judgment-free human being on the earth.”

The talk-show host went on to produce a stylish gift for Gaga that said, “Lettuce move past meat.”

For all the expected beef from animal-rights activists, Lady Gaga sure looked a lot like a PETA ad. [UPDATE: And here’s the official outraged PETA statement.]
