According to Joan Gonvalvo, a biologist with the Ionian Dolphin Project, the bottlenose “surprised us leaping out of the water with an unexpected guest attached to its belly (right on top of its genital slit!).” The leap was probably intended to dislodge the cephalopod merkin, but aside from being forced into showy acrobatics by an uninvited crotch hitchhiker (crotchhiker?), the dolphin was fine.
