Obama on energy independence and Bush
Today, Sen. Barack Obama gave a speech before the Associated Press, ripping Bush administration energy policy a new you-know-what.
Think Progress has the full transcript. There's press coverage here.
(Our Obama mini-interview on the same subject is here.)
Update [2006-4-3 14:38:9 by David Roberts]: Hm ... reading through it, I see the speech is at least as much about global warming as it is about energy independence. Which is actually more interesting -- it's one of the most forthright and comprehensive descriptions of the danger of climate change that I've seen from a prominent politician.

Obama and Lugar introduce ‘American Fuels Act’
I'm not in the habit of regurgitating press releases, but one I just got from Obama's office seems significant, so I'm reprinting it below the fold. (As I'm sure our faithful readers will hasten to point out, it's an ethanol bill.) Discuss.

Me and Barack
This Saturday, I will be meeting Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.). I've been told I get exactly five minutes of his time. That's enough time for about, um, one question (actually, the way I talk, I'm lucky if I get the question itself out in five minutes). One question.
What should it be?

That man’s got a pair, you gotta give him that
Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) delivered a major speech on energy independence today. The setting was a meeting of the National Governors Association -- specifically, the Governors' Ethanol Coalition.
I'll probably have more to say about it in coming days, but for now, I've just reprinted the entire speech below the fold, for your viewing pleasure.
I think it's pretty ballsy. But let me know what you think.

Obama and Inslee propose to save the American auto industry by paying it to do the smart thing
Don't miss "Salvaging the Auto Industry," a Boston Globe op-ed from Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) and Rep. Jay Inslee (D-Wash.), two of the Dems' brightest lights on energy issues. (Inslee wrote a piece in Grist on his New Apollo Energy Act.)
Obama and Inslee propose a piece of legislation called the "Health Care for Hybrids" Act. The idea is that the feds would help American auto companies pay some of their enormous healthcare costs; in return, the companies would commit to using the money to develop fuel-efficient vehicles.
I'm a little dubious about the bill on the merits.

Big Oil suppressing biofuels? Obama thinks so.
Well well. Seems Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) agrees with ThinkProgress that Big Oil doesn't want you to know about biofuels.
Hot off the press-release presses:
U.S. Senators Barack Obama (D-IL) and Charles Grassley (R-IA) today asked the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to investigate whether big oil corporations are knowingly restricting consumer access to alternative fuels like ethanol and biodiesel as a result of company policies.
"I believe that it is crucial for our national security and economic security that the United States lessen its dependence on foreign oil," said Senator Obama. "And if big oil companies are standing in the way of consumers who want to fill their vehicles with cleaner alternative fuels made here in the United States, then I believe the American people deserve to know why."
According to an internal memorandum from a major petroleum company obtained by Senator Obama's office, gas station franchise owners are prohibited from selling non brand name renewable fuels like E85 and B20 from fuel islands or underneath canopies bearing the oil company's name or logo. The memo also said that any alternative location of fuel pumps dispensing alternative fuels must be approved. This could get interesting.

Obama and a bipartisan crew of colleagues unveil eco-friendly bills on energy
Caterwauling over the Iraq War last week brought Congress to a rancorous new low, drowning out calls from both sides of the aisle for a clean and sane energy future. A handful of senators and reps unveiled proposals pressing for the Bush administration and automakers to shrink America’s outsized energy demands and tackle the climate […]
