Critical List: Coal companies lavish cash on Boehner; how to stick it to hungry deer
Boehner's got his hands all sooty with coal money.
Uh, guys? Maybe we should check up on the safety of nuclear plants? Kthx. XOXO, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
California chose solar PV projects over solar thermal projects because the latter use more water. -
Ad claims tar-sands oil will save women
A group called Ethical Oil, the brainchild of neocon Alykhan Velshi, is running an ad touting Keystone XL as the savior of women in Saudi Arabia. Because suddenly conservatives care about women's rights.

The gas tax is actually super low, thanks to inflation
Eric Cantor thinks that bike sharing is siphoning off way too much of the country's gas tax revenue. And for a Republican like him, raising the tax is out of the question, never mind that, as Greater Greater Washington's Matt Johnson points out, in inflation-adjusted dollars, the gas tax has gone down by 34 percent since 1994, the last time it was raised. And, again in inflation-adjusted dollars, the gas tax was actually highest in 1960.

Critical List: Oil industry says it has jobs to offer; Senate could cut clean energy funding
Need a job? Alberta's tar sands industry wants YOU.
But if you want to stay in this country, never fear, the oil and gas industry wants to create jobs here. On the one hand: Yay jobs! On the other hand: Boo oil and gas industry!
A European court put the kibosh on honey that contains even a tiny bit of pollen from GMO crops. If we know Monsanto, they’re now working on a genetically modified bee that neutralizes evidence of genetic modification from the genetically modified pollen it collects.

Why the hell does Michele Bachmann want to drill for oil in the Everglades?
Michele Bachman wants to drill for oil "whether that is in the Everglades or whether that is in the Eastern Gulf region or whether that is in North Dakota." Even Republicans think this is kind of nuts, because even Republicans are willing to agree that the Everglades has some nice stuff that it'd be darn shame to ruin forever. But for Bachmann, it's a "wonderful treasure trove of energy that God has given us in this country."
If you're thinking, oil in the Gulf … ok; oil in North Dakota … sure, I read that New Yorker article; but … is there even oil the Everglades?? … well, we're with you. A federally employed geologist told a local Florida TV station that "there is no known evidence that there is a significant hydrocarbon deposit beneath the Everglades."
But the Associated Press reports that there is one tract of privately owned land where oil was found in 1943. -
Secretary of Energy is a Keystone XL booster
Secretary of Energy Steven Chu hasn't said definitively whether he supports the Keystone XL pipeline. But he's heavily implied that he's a fan, laying out the project's potential benefits in an interview with energyNOW!. "It's not perfect," said Chu of the pipeline, which would increase greenhouse-gas emissions and quite probably leak to boot. But he […]

Obama can't catch a break on oil
He presided over record growth in oil rigs, pissing off progressives, but the GOP blames high gas prices on Obama's supposedly anti-drilling policies. Where is the love?

In battle between fuel and food, food is losing worse than ever
Despite the backlash against ethanol in the U.S. and biodiesel in the E.U., global production of biofuels was up 17 percent in 2010. That's 27.7 billion gallons of liquid fuel for the year. (For reference, the U.S. uses 137 billion gallons of gasoline per year, though that's not directly equivalent because biofuels include biodiesel, and ethanol contains slightly less energy than regular gasoline.)

Everything you've heard about the tar sands and energy security is wrong
Here’s the reality: Protecting the United States’ energy security means keeping our continent’s oil in the ground for when we need it in an emergency.
