In another blow to biotechnology in Britain, one of a small group of farmers set to participate in trial plantings of genetically modified crops has dropped out of the project. The farmer changed his tune after meeting with local residents and members of Friends of the Earth, which has gone to court to try to halt the government’s GM crop trials. Meanwhile, two of Britain’s leading food retailers have noted dramatic increases in their sales of organic products, particularly baby food. Sainsbury’s has announced that it will soon be introducing organic gin, a world first, and organic vodka.
