As part of a $3 million October campaign blitz, the Sierra Club announced yesterday that it will run TV and radio ads criticizing the environmental record of George W. Bush in four swing states — Michigan, Missouri, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. In one ad, set to start running on Monday, an announcer says, “Al Gore created the Clean Water Action Plan to clean up polluted runoff. George Bush weakened clean water standards for rivers and lakes in Texas.” The group will also run ads critical of Republicans running for Senate in Michigan, Montana, Virginia, and Washington. Meanwhile, during a campaign swing through Ohio, Green Party candidate Ralph Nader called Gore a “certified political coward” for failing to keep a 1992 promise to block a hazardous waste incinerator on the banks of the Ohio River.
