India’s Supreme Court last week issued a landmark ruling requiring the government to crack down on auto pollution in New Delhi. New cars sold in the New Delhi area will have to meet European emission standards, and a strict limit on car sales will be put in place. Government officials say that more than half of the city’s air pollution is caused by automobiles and the city is becoming one of the most polluted in the world. Some said the ruling was not strong enough because it doesn’t affect cars already in use, and urged the Supreme Court to extend the ruling to other large Indian cities.
