Tiny houses growing in popularity
Can you imagine living in a 120-square-foot house? Yeah, me neither. (Where would all my shoes go?) But I’m really kinda digging this tiny house trend. True, most of these less-than-500-square-feet abodes are second homes (and I’m still struggling to save for my first), but I love the idea of making it more about enjoying […]

No big deal, say Ohio meteoroligists
Guess the IPCC report really was sort of a bust. Dave reports that a big swath of the pundocracy says global warming sucks, but there’s nothing we can do about it. Oh well. Over in Cleveland, a bunch of meteorologists aren’t even sure it sucks. They say it’s just not that big of a deal. […]

Duh!
As if it were news, a report by Intellichoice.com found that over a five-year span, the owner of a Prius saves more than $13,000 compared to the owner of a similar non-hybrid.In fact, the savings apply "across the board," to all 22 hybrids evaluated. What's more, the study was the most inclusive of any yet: It factored in insurance, fuel, taxes, maintenance, and the works.

We’re Just a Lincoln Your Chain
Daily Grist takes a break for democracy’s sake Know what’s more fun than gawking at the ever-expanding field of 2008 presidential contenders? Pausing for a moment to reflect upon the noble and not-so-noble men who have brought us to this point. With that goal in mind, Grist will be taking Monday off to spend Presidents’ […]

It’s Official: He Rocks
Gore announces continents-spanning concert series, Live Earth Never let it be said that Al Gore is not dedicated to his cause: the man will do whatever it takes to raise awareness about climate change. If it means hobnobbing at Sundance, he’ll do it. Starring in a film that gets nominated for an Oscar? Not afraid. […]

Yes, really
Reports out of Spain over the holidays indicate that Siberian bears aren't the only ones losing sleep this winter. In the Cantabarian mountains of northern Spain, mother bears are postponing hibernation to gather food that isn't usually available. -
Hybrid cars dangerously quiet for pedestrians
Turns out that it isn't just U.S. automakers that have been put in mortal danger by hybrids (it is their fault, of course): the National Federation of the Blind said this week that those at risk include (gasp) cyclists, the blind, the elderly, and distracted pedestrians. Lay on those horns, people!

Offers boldest plan of any candidate
To call ex-Iowa governor Tom Vilsack a dark horse candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination is to underestimate the chances of dark-colored horses. But it seems to have freed him up to make some serious policy proposals. The energy plan (PDF) Vilsack unveiled on Tuesday is the ballsiest and most detailed any candidate from either […]

She says the right thing
Hillary Clinton says the two questions she’s asked most often by young people are about stopping genocide in Darfur and about stopping global warming. Here she is at a town hall meeting in New Hampshire: (via Hugg)
