Two Environmentalists Win UNEP Award
Two dedicated environmentalists — one from China, one from Brazil — will share the Sasakawa Prize, which is awarded every year by the United Nations Environment Programme. Xie Zhenhua, vice chair of the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development, has spent more than 20 years promoting environmental protection and sustainable economic growth. Brazil’s Dener Jose Giovanini is founder of the National Network for Combating Animal Trafficking, which seeks to stem the illegal trade in Brazilian wildlife by offering support and alternatives for potential poachers. The two winners will split the $200,000 prize, to be presented next month by U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan.
