Friends of the Earth will stick it to Al Gore today when the group’s political action committee announces that it will back Bill Bradley, Gore’s rival for the Democratic presidential nomination. The group notes that Bradley’s voting record in Congress got a higher rating than Gore’s from the League of Conservation Voters — 85 percent compared to 66 percent. But FoE particularly faults Gore for being “part of an administration which has done significant international environmental damage.” The group says that the Clinton administration has “weakened the phaseout” for the pesticide methyl bromide, which depletes the ozone layer, and that the administration should have pushed for stronger energy conservation measures and a tougher Kyoto treaty on climate change.
