Motorville is sometimes portrayed as living on oil (it eats derricks, and car oil flows through its road-map veins), and sometimes as an addict mainlining crude, but both are effective illustrations of how oil-dependent our cities are. And who knows? If the Texas supply dried up, as it does in the film, maybe all our cities WOULD rise up and swim to Saudi Arabia in search of a fix. I think New York would probably not really look like an apple though.
