We at Grist have known for years that Tom Philpott, our senior food and agriculture writer, is a rock star. We’re delighted that the rest of the world is figuring it out too.
Tom has been nominated for a James Beard Foundation Journalism Award in the “Food-Related Columns and Commentary” category. The James Beard awards — named in honor of the legendary chef and food writer — are “the Oscars of the food world,” as Time magazine puts it.
The awards committee singled out three of Tom’s must-read posts from the past year:
- “Time for the public to reinvest in food-system infrastructure”
- “How the agrichemical industry turns failure into market opportunity”
- “The history of urban agriculture should inspire its future”
The award winners will be announced at a ceremony on May 6, where the crowd will be star-studded and the food and drink will be to die for. Good luck, Tom!
