The Clinton administration continues to give signs that it will postpone until after the presidential election a recommendation on whether to breach four dams on the lower Snake River in Washington state. Washington Sen. Slade Gorton (R) this week renewed his promise to block any proposal to breach the dams, saying there’s not enough scientific evidence that doing so would help restore declining salmon runs. Meanwhile, the Sierra Club is launching a campaign that accuses Gorton of helping polluters and voting against clean water and salmon protection. The group will run radio and TV ads criticizing Gorton’s environmental record. Sierra Club volunteers also plan to distribute thousands of anti-Gorton leaflets at Earth Day 2000 events this weekend.
