Most vampires hate the sun. Not Ian Somerhalder. Then again, he only plays one on tween fave Vampire Diaries (you may also recognize the 35-year-old actor as Boone Carlyle from the first season of Lost). Somerhalder’s eponymous foundation has launched a Twitter campaign and infographic that tout solar’s superiority and coal’s vileness.

As Somerhalder wrote in a spring update on the foundation’s site:

Reader support helps sustain our work. Donate today to keep our climate news free. All donations DOUBLED!

COAL ABSOLUTELY SUCKS. If you haven’t already, please learn about our biggest campaign to date – #CoalSucks … We’re creating a massive Twitter storm to tell people we are dead serious about clean energy and ridding ourselves of old dirty fossil fuels.

Grist thanks its sponsors. Become one.

#CoalSucks runs May 1st through this May 7th, so please go read our infographic and get excited! It’s tied in with my episode of Years of Living Dangerously, ‘The Preacher’s Daughter,’ on Showtime this Sunday May 4th at 10 p.m.

Clearly aimed at igniting Somerhalder’s young fanbase, the #CoalSucks infographic includes some basic facts about clean energy, as well as 60 sample tweets, many haranguing Duke Energy, John Boehner, and the EPA. Bill Nye he’s not, with suggested tweets like “The sun might be hot, but it’s cooler than coal,” but maybe that’s a good thing — hopefully this bloodsucker can help teens realize they have a stake in the planet’s future.
