Instead of buying cheap, mass-produced gewgaws to give out this season, show your loved ones you care with a little DIY. During Grist’s 12 days of DIY gifts, we’ll share some crafty projects, with instructions that even we can follow. There’s sure to be a whatsit or wowsit for everyone.
Jewelry organizers are great gifts for the person in your life who has too many things and needs more things to put them in. And you only need a few more things to make them.
You can easily find all of the supplies for these gifts at your local thrift and craft stores, plus these gifts are also easy to personalize to the recipient – whether their style is twee, sophisticated, or modern.
For someone with lots of stud earrings, rings, and/or bracelets, a jewelry plate stand is an easy and fun gift. Just visit a thrift store to find a cheap plate and a figurine to stand at the center. You can also get plastic figurines and spray paint them fun colors! Lastly, all you need to put this gift together is some hardy craft glue.
Jewelry frames are great for people who have an excess of necklaces and/or dangly earrings. For this one, find a picture frame and — instead of putting a picture in it — fit it with a thin sheet of corkboard. If you really want to get fancy, you can cover it with some pretty fabric, or even add a section of metal screen for earrings. Either way, add pins to hang necklaces on, and voila! Mischief managed.
