Grist is pleased to announce it is launching a new partnership with CalMatters to cover the impacts of climate change in California’s Central Valley.

The two organizations will co-fund a reporter, who will produce stories about how climate intersects with agriculture, health, energy, and more, as well as the impact of public policy on climate and the environment. In addition, the reporter’s stories will be distributed to local outlets across California and beyond to republish for free. Grist will also adapt the new hire’s reporting for a national audience.

The role will be part of Grist’s growing Local News Initiative, which embeds journalists at trusted, local media outlets across the country, bringing high-quality climate media to people who might not otherwise have access to it. Grist currently has local reporters in Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Montana, Michigan, Nebraska, North Carolina, and Utah.

“The Central Valley represents a laboratory for the effects of climate change on communities, from their health to how we grow our food to how we manage water,” said Grist CEO Nikhil Swaminathan. “Grist has wanted to get regular reporting from the region for years, and I’m thrilled our friends at CalMatters helped us achieve that goal. We’re great admirers of their work and excited for the reporting that will come out of this partnership.”

Grist thanks its sponsors. Become one.

“We’re proud to partner with the best-in-class journalists at Grist,” said CalMatters CEO Neil Chase. “Our changing climate has a dramatic impact on this vital region that feeds America, and this coverage is needed now more than ever.”

Qualified journalists interested in this role should apply here. The reporter will be a CalMatters employee and will be based in the Central Valley. They will also work extensively with the Grist newsroom to distribute and nationalize their reporting.
