Grist is pleased to announce it is launching a new partnership with Spotlight PA to cover the impacts of climate change in Pennsylvania.

The two organizations will co-fund a reporting position to examine how climate intersects with energy, land use, water, and other issues in Pennsylvania, as well as the impact of public policy on climate and the environment. In addition, the reporter’s stories will be distributed to local outlets across the state and beyond to republish for free. Grist will also adapt the new hire’s reporting for a national audience.

The role will be part of Grist’s growing Local News Initiative, which embeds journalists at trusted, local media outlets across the country, bringing high-quality climate media to people who might not otherwise have access to it. Grist currently has local reporters in Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Montana, Michigan, Nebraska, North Carolina, and Utah. The organization is currently also hiring for reporters in Texas and California.

“Since we started building our Local News Initiative, Pennsylvania has been on our radar. From fracking to sea level rise, there are so many issues related to climate change and the clean energy transition playing out in the state,” said Grist CEO Nikhil Swaminathan. “As I’ve learned more about Spotlight PA and seen their innovative and in-depth approach to journalism, I became convinced that when we were able to expand to Pennsylvania, it had to be with them.”

Grist thanks its sponsors. Become one.

“We consistently hear from readers across Pennsylvania that they want more coverage of the environment, including how it’s changing and why, who’s impacting it the most and how, and how those charged with protecting it are doing their jobs — or not,” said Christopher Baxter, CEO and president of Spotlight PA. “We’re thrilled to be teaming up with the experts at Grist to deliver top-notch investigative and public-service reporting.”

Qualified journalists interested in this role should apply here. The reporter will be a Spotlight PA employee and can be based anywhere in Pennsylvania. They will also work extensively with the Grist newsroom to distribute and nationalize their reporting.
