Grist and KERA, NPR’s affiliate in Dallas-Fort Worth, have teamed up to jointly fund a reporting position focused on climate, energy and the environment in West and North Texas.

The role will be part of Grist’s growing Local News Initiative, which embeds journalists at trusted, local media outlets across the country, bringing high-quality climate media to people who might not otherwise have access to it. Grist currently has local reporters in Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana Michigan, Nebraska, North Carolina and Utah, and has a new reporter starting in Montana next month.

“One of the most important venues for documenting climate impacts and understanding the clean energy transition is Texas — where everything is bigger. That can include climate-influenced disasters, sadly, but it’s also true of the energy scene: on the oil and gas side of the ledger, of course, and on the renewable side, as well,“ said Nikhil Swaminathan, Grist’s CEO. “We could not be more excited about expanding our Local News Initiative in collaboration with KERA, who shares the same zeal for collaboration as we do, and can help us maximize the reach of this work.”

“At KERA, we’re proud to embrace collaboration as the future of local journalism,” says Nico Leone, President & CEO of KERA. “We’re thrilled to team up with Grist on this position to bring trusted climate, energy and environmental reporting to the people of North Texas and across our state.”

Grist thanks its sponsors. Become one.

The new hire will cover climate and energy in West and North Texas, and local stories will be made available through The Texas Newsroom and to syndicate to a media network throughout the state and region. The reporter will also nationalize some of these stories for Grist, which will be made available to republish to Grist’s national syndication network.

Applications are now open for this role. The reporter will be a KERA employee and will be based in the Dallas / Fort Worth area. They will also work extensively with the Grist newsroom to distribute and nationalize their reporting.
