A few weeks back, we told you about the San Francisco 49ers’ spiffy new solar-powered digs. Now, another NFL team wants to get with the green program.
For their Wednesday night practice, the Detroit Lions’ quarterbacks will sport bright-green jerseys made out of recycled plastic bottles. The team wants to promote its #TurnItGreen campaign. One of the initiative’s goals: Recycle 100 percent of all waste generated at Ford Field this season. To help reach this benchmark, the team plans on expanding the number of stadium recycling bins to 500.
The unis are made by Repreve, a company that in the past has created caps and gowns out of plastic bottles. According to an ESPN report the fiber technology isn’t quite game ready, so don’t expect recycled-plastic jerseys anytime soon. And wearing the promotional unis during a weeknight practice in August will certainly limit exposure (to quote the great point guard Allen Iverson: We’re talkin’ about practice — not the game). But if NFL teams continue to try and outgreen each other, we’ll happily tune in to that competition.
