Nobody wants to be subject to stereotypes or derision because of what they drive. Now a short film looks at the painful reality of how that fear can affect your love life.

Anthony Deptula wrote, directed, and acted in Bad Cars, a six-minute film that riffs on the difficulties of finding love with a shitty vehicle in L.A. In the movie, two sweet, adorable hipsters on a first date each fear mockery and rejection for their decrepit cars — without knowing the other is in the exact same boat. Watch:

Now, I take issue with the portrayal of buses as inconvenient and unsexy. Let’s recall Patrick Moberg, a guy who met his shorty on the New York subway, or Bus Chick Carla Saulter, whose hubby sat next to her on a Seattle bus. Anyone who’s waited for the 545 can tell you there’s eye-fucking to be had with attractive young Microsoft nerds at the bus stop. And tandem bikes are basically sex on wheels. (I never got The Talk, OK? All I know is that sex requires a helmet.)

From what I hear, though, driving in L.A. is horrible, and driving a car in L.A. that might get you home but will probably croak on the freeway sounds downright nightmarish, even if you’re not also worried that it will ruin your love life. Clearly the solution is to leave L.A. and find love elsewhere, maybe in a city that thinks buses are sexy.
