This beautiful moth is painted with images of other insects (and bird poop)

W. Piel and Antónia Monteiro

This beautiful Malaysian moth, of the species Macrocilix maia, scoffs at the usual insect camouflage. “Oh, you’re a leaf? Challenging. Tell me again about your eyespots, those must have taken you FOREVER to evolve. Oh, this? Just a complex mural of two flies eating bird droppings. Yes, I do also smell like bird poop to add verisimilitude, thank you for noticing the little touches.”

In short, nature is weird, and a moth’s idea of fashion is weird.
