In the wedding world, one of the most important choices — the one that, according to the wedding industry, will define you as a person — is which flouncy dress you buy. You need THE DRESS, which will forever after be your dress. Of course, in the real world it’s actually just an overpriced pile of fabric that you’ll never wear again. But Stephanie Watson did an end run around this whole concept when she constructed her wedding dress out of plastic bread bag ties.
Watson made her wedding dress out of 10,000 (mostly pre-used) bag ties, i.e. the plastic square with a hole that holds the bag closed until you lose it. The whole dress cost less than $50 to make. And it’s beautiful:
Watson’s a dress designer, so she had some advantage here. But here’s living proof: It is possible to have a special dress that’s not a gigantic waste of material or money. It’s even possible to have a special dress that’s not a gigantic waste of material and money AND can hold 10,000 bread bags closed. Every little girl’s dream!
