Jerry Adler has a rundown on climate change in this year’s presidential campaign. Somewhat miraculously for a mainstream publication like Newsweek, it’s pretty good.

So, ironically, McCain — with a voting record that would put him at the bottom of the heap among Democrats — is sometimes perceived as more passionate about the environment than his Democratic opponents, whose objectively much stronger records are viewed as a matter of party orthodoxy.

I’ll just say that the disparity between the way McCain is “perceived” and the reality of his record and positions is what’s sustaining his entire campaign. If the press stops kissing his ass perceiving him in a way at odds with the reality of his governance, I suspect his support will dwindle.
