Al Gore’s Nobel Peace Prize was met with howls of outrage and resentment from the right, which never met anything other than war that it couldn’t drum up some howls of outrage and resentment about. The smear of choice was to mention Gore’s name in the same sentence as a bunch of bad people. Or to say that the Nobel committee hates Bush. Pretty much how they deal with all critics, in other words. Here’s a small sampling from the fever swamps:
Iain Murray of Planet Gore:
Who Else Should Al Gore Share the Prize With?
How about that well known peace campaigner Osama Bin Laden, who implicitly endorsed Gore’s stance – and that of the Nobel committee – in his September rant from the cave
So now ‘Algore’ will join Yasir Arafat among the list of noble Nobel peace laureates. … I call on Albert Arnold ‘Algore’ to redirect his Nobel Peace Prize to genuine agents of peace. … If there has ever been an engine of peace, it’s the United States military.
New York Sun editor Seth Lipsky:
LIPSKY: I can’t think of anything more directly responsive to the idealism of the Nobel Peace Prize itself than the kinds of liberation and peacekeeping that our G.I. Joe and G.I. Jane has had as a mission since World War II.
CAVUTO: So, you say Gen. Petraeus, not Al Gore?
LIPSKY: I say Gen. Petraeus, not Al Gore.
People who genuinely labor for peace (read a partial list in the Oct. 13 Wall Street Journal lead editorial) are often ignored by the Nobel committee. Despite evidence from NASA and other scientific sources, which rebut Gore’s claims of pending climate disaster, CGW members have the kind of blind faith displayed at a Benny Hinn healing service.
Czech president Vaclav Klaus:
The relationship between his activities and world peace is unclear and indistinct … It rather seems that Gore’s doubting of basic cornerstones of the current civilization does not contribute to peace.
When did the Nobel Peace Prize go off the tracks? Today’s award to Al Gore and the IPCC … fits in with a subset of cosmopolitan frauds, fakers, murderers, thieves, and no-accounts going back about twenty years.
The Nobel will be one more quiver in Gore’s arsenal of intransigent moral authority by which he refuses to debate any aspect of the subject and declares the entire matter ‘settled.’ It’s never a good sign when politicians declare a scientific matter settled; we all remember how well that worked out for the Vatican when they told Galileo 400 years ago that astronomy was settled.
Meteorologist Bill Gray:
One of the world’s foremost meteorologists Friday called the theory that helped Al Gore win a share of the Nobel Prize "ridiculous" and the product of "people who don’t understand how the atmosphere works."
Gore hasn’t brought us peace, but he’s sure waging a fine war against capitalism. And if there’s one thing a bunch of herring-stuffed Nordic socialists love, it’s anybody who makes millions by attacking free markets.
The former US Vice-President has already taken over from Michael Moore as the most sanctimonious lardbutt Yank on the planet. Can you imagine what he’ll be like now that the Norwegian Nobel committee has given him the prize?
So the Nobel Prize committee closes its eyes to the biggest source of violence against innocent civilians in the world today — Islamic terrorism — and instead goes searching for debatable problems that haven’t necessarily killed anyone yet, but might someday.
There are cynical people, and you know who you are, who believe Al Gore has no business receiving a Nobel Peace Prize. They say he can’t be trusted, hasn’t advanced the cause of peace and really doesn’t deserve anything more than to have his mouth taped shut with a racquetball inside.
Look on the bright side: after Arafat, Carter, and Iranian marionette Mohammed ElBaradei, the award couldn’t possibly be more degraded.
