Every year, the holidays remind us that we are perpetually and inescapably surrounded by love stuff.  (Love, too, though!) In the era of Black Friday, we tend to find ourselves laden down with objects given out of a sense of anxiety-driven obligation (“I’m sure my brother will really love and use this Mike Tomlin bobblehead …”) than genuine affection.

Here at Grist, we’ve been giving you tips on how to give more heartfelt and/or useful gifts, but we wanted to see how these kinds of presents would really be received. In the spirit of original journalistic research, we sent our resident Holiday Elf Eve to interview some unsuspecting children about their feelings on DIY gifts. Watch our video to see how it went!
